Rotten wood window repairs are not something that homeowners ever want to hear. Repairs to the wood can be performed, but at what cost? That all depends of the window manufacturer and the availability to get replacement wood parts. Casement wood sashes that have rot on just the bottom rail can be repaired in a few days. Ordering an entirely new replacement sash can take months and be very expensive. We can reproduce most the wood surrounds called sash wood inserts. These parts normally are not available from the window manufacturer and have to be custom made. We mill the new wood replacement parts out of wood that is better than what was originally installed. We never use finger jointed wood in the window parts we produce.
Depending on the amount of rotten wood on the window sash, our repairs may require us to take the sashes back to our wood shop. When we remove the sash, we board up the window opening to be secured until we return. Once we get the window sash to our shop, we remove all the rotten wood. Any repairs to the sash frame or impact glass is performed at this time. The new rotten wood replacement parts are now milled and installed.

Extensive rotten wood damage on Eagle wood casement windows
New wood parts have to be glued & clamped to the aluminum window frame. The new wood parts will cure overnight and bond to the unaffected wood in the sash frame inserts. Once glue has dried, we can sand the new wood parts to blend with the other wood frame parts. any cracks or gaps are filled and sanded to complete the repair. We then prime the bare wood with a premium grade paint primer. Replace all the window hardware and hinges and return back to your home to install into the window frame.
Picture windows and Fixed casement windows have to be repaired onsite since these types of windows cannot be removed. We bring the wood shop to you. We set up all of our woodworking equipment and begin to remove the rotten wood. Much the same as how we repair casement sash windows, we custom produce the window parts onsite. This takes longer to make repairs than if we were able to bring back to our facility to perform the repairs.

It sounds like a long process, but having your rotten wood on your wood windows repaired is a very cost saving alternative to window replacement. Weather Shield, Caradco and Hurd windows were expensive when they were originally installed. Replacement costs of the entire window and frame can be staggering. The cots of the wood windows have risen tremendously to start with. Adding to the overall cost of window replacement will include: window removal labor, disposal, permitting, pressure calculations, engineering, and installation labor. Painting, interior wood trim, exterior stone work applique' can also add to the overall replacement cost. Caradco and Hurd windows and doors are no longer in business. Getting new replacement parts for these window brands are not an option. Hurd windows are now owned by Sierra Pacific windows and doors. The Hurd design product line has been discontinued and also not available. Weather Shield wood windows have replacement parts available, but not for the older Contempra design. Kolbe & Kolbe still produces window replacement parts for their new and older windows and doors.
